I've just tried using a quilting needle (marked with a green splodge of paint) when doing machine buttonhole stitch, and miraculously the thread doesn't snap every 3".

When finishing off threads at the begining and ending of each row of sewing use a self threading needle - this will speed up your work considerably.

When trying to thread your sewing machine needle, put a finger behind the bottom of the needle and the lighter colour will show up behind the hole to see where your thread should go.
